Kyle Grunenfelder
Welcome to Black Lake Elementary! My name is Kyle Grunenfelder (students and staff often call me Mr. G), and I am beyond lucky to get to be the principal of this incredible “Bobcat” community.
I have spent most of my life connected to education and the community of Tumwater; my parents were educators, my sister is a teacher, and my Grandma “G” (Hilde Grunenfelder) was even a long time Secretary for multiple Superintendents in Tumwater. Before becoming a principal, I wore many different ‘hats’ in education and have experience in most grade levels and school levels. My experiences have shaped my belief that every student deserves a supportive, engaging, and caring learning environment where they are set up to thrive.
Being an educator is more than just a job for me—it’s a calling. I love the energy of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and the partnership we build with families. Watching students grow in confidence, curiosity, and personality is the most rewarding part of my work. Whether it’s celebrating their achievements, problem-solving challenges, or simply greeting them each morning, I cherish every opportunity to support our Bobcats on their learning journey.
Outside of school, my joy is my family. I have a wife and four amazing children, who remind me daily of the importance of curiosity, resilience, and kindness. As a family, we love the outdoors, laughing together, and finding as many adventures in life as possible from the ’small to the grand’.
I am deeply grateful to get to be a part of the BLE community and look forward to partnering with you all to make this school the best it can be for every single student.
